1Stop the water flow
Lift the cistern (toilet tank) lid. Find the float ball — lift it up and wedge it with a clothes peg. This prevents auto-refill. Most critical step — stops the volume from increasing.
2Wait 5-10 min for natural drainage
If you see ANY slow drop in water level → blockage is partial, DIY can probably clear it (continue to step 3). If NO drop at all → blockage is total, skip to step 5 (call a pro).
3Try plunger (toilet plunger, not sink type)
Press down firmly + pull up FAST — repeat 10-15 cycles. The trick: the PULL-UP motion is what does the work (negative pressure sucks the blockage loose), not the push-down. If you hear a "gurgle" + water starts to drop → success. If still nothing after 15 cycles → stop and skip to step 5.
4DO NOT pour anything in
Absolutely don't pour bleach, Drano, Sosh, or boiling water down the toilet.
Why: 1) Chemicals damage plastic and cast iron pipes (worse long-term problem) 2) Boiling water can crack the porcelain bowl 3) If the blockage is a foreign object (toy, sanitary product) chemicals do nothing 4) When the plumber arrives, the chemicals can injure them (eye burns) — many plumbers will refuse to work on a chemical-treated toilet.
