The 3 most common HK washing-machine drain causes
Almost every washing-machine drain call we run in Hong Kong is one of these three. Knowing which one matters — the wrong fix returns within weeks.
DIY check before you call (1-minute test)
- Pull the drain hose out of the standpipe. Look inside the hose end — heavy grey lint coating means cause #1.
- Pour 1 litre of hot water (NOT boiling) down the standpipe. If it backs up immediately, it's a hard blockage. If it drains slow with bubbling, biofilm is likely.
- Start a rinse-only cycle and watch the floor drain. If the floor drain bubbles, water rises, or smells appear during spin — shared-stack or vent issue. Stop the cycle and message us.

How we clear it
Frequently asked questions
- Will you damage my washing machine?
- No. We clear the drain path — the standpipe and floor trap. We do not open the machine itself. If we suspect the machine's internal drain pump has failed, we tell you and refer to an appliance technician.
- Do I need to disconnect anything before you arrive?
- No. Leave the machine as-is. We need around 60cm clearance behind the machine to access the standpipe. If you can't pull it forward yourself, we will on arrival.
- Why does the smell return after a few weeks if you cleared it?
- Two reasons: (a) you have a dry P-trap — water in the trap evaporates if the machine isn't run for 7+ days; pour 0.5L water down the floor drain weekly. (b) The clear was incomplete — biofilm regrew. We re-test on-site before leaving to catch this, and if a re-block happens we can re-attend on a case-by-case basis. There is no fixed 7-day guarantee.
- Same-day service?
- 120-min typical response in dense urban zones. NT and out-of-hours longer. We always confirm an ETA on WhatsApp before dispatch. If we can't make it same-day, we say so up front — we don't make promises we can't keep.
- Is this covered by HK home insurance?
- Sometimes — accidental damage from overflow may be covered; gradual wear is usually excluded. We provide a written diagnostic and before/after photos with every paid job, which most HK insurers (HSBC, AIA, Blue Cross, Generali) accept as evidence. We do not promise specific claim outcomes.
