Why is my washing machine draining slowly in Hong Kong flats?

Three causes account for nearly all HK cases: (1) lint and detergent silt building up in the standpipe behind the machine; (2) scale and biofilm hardening at the P-trap, common in 1980s-90s cast-iron drains; (3) a partially blocked shared waste stack that overflows the floor trap during spin cycle. We diagnose which one before quoting.

Will you damage my washing machine?

No. We clear the drain hose, standpipe and floor trap — the path the water takes after it leaves your machine. We do not open the machine or its internal pump. If we suspect the machine's own drain pump has failed (e.g. clears but won't pump out), we tell you and refer to an appliance technician.

Do I need to disconnect the washing machine before you arrive?

No. Leave it as-is — we can pull it forward to access the standpipe and floor drain. Just make sure there is roughly 60cm clearance behind the machine so we can swing the auger in.

The 3 most common HK washing-machine drain causes

Almost every washing-machine drain call we run in Hong Kong is one of these three. Knowing which one matters — the wrong fix returns within weeks.

1. Lint & detergent silt in the standpipe. Front-loaders shed lint every cycle; over 12-24 months it cakes inside the 50mm standpipe behind the machine. Symptom: drain holds back during spin, gurgles when machine pauses, sometimes overflows the standpipe lip. This is the easiest case — manual auger plus a hot-water flush clears it.

2. Scale & biofilm at the P-trap. Older HK flats (pre-2000 cast iron, some PVC retrofits) build a hard ring of soap scum + mineral scale right at the trap bend. Symptom: persistent smell at the floor drain, slow drain even after standpipe clear, water level rises across both the standpipe and floor trap together. Needs warm-water flush plus mechanical reaming.

3. Bend / mis-pitched hose, or shared-stack backflow. Drain hose kinked behind machine, hose installed below the trap weir, or — more serious — the shared waste stack between you and the unit below is partly silted. Symptom: the floor drain in your bathroom or kitchen bubbles or overflows while the washer is running. DIY check before you call (1-minute test)

Run this before WhatsApp:

Pull the drain hose out of the standpipe. Look inside the hose end — heavy grey lint coating means cause #1.
Pour 1 litre of hot water (NOT boiling) down the standpipe. If it backs up immediately, it's a hard blockage. If it drains slow with bubbling, biofilm is likely.
Start a rinse-only cycle and watch the floor drain. If the floor drain bubbles, water rises, or smells appear during spin — shared-stack or vent issue. Stop the cycle and message us.
